The state policy in the field of measurements is determined by the Cabinet of the Minister of Economy, Energy and Tourism and executed by the Chairman of the Bulgarian Metrology Institute and chairman of the State Agency for Metrology and Technical Surveillance according to their powers.

Carries out activities including:

• creation, maintenance and improvement of the national standards of the Republic of Bulgaria;
• organization of construction and development of the national system of certified reference materials;
• ensuring the traceability of measurements in the country through calibration;
• metrological control of measuring instruments - testing for type approval, initial and subsequent verification and metrological expertise of measuring devices.

Assist public authorities in exercising their powers in matters related measurements.
Conduct metrological research and provides services related to measurements in areas of social, scientific and economic interest.
Conducts activities related to the international recognition of the results of measurements carried out in Bulgaria.
Carries out trainings and consultations on metrological issues.
